Herbal Diet Aides

In today’s dieting craze, herbal products are the fastest selling items in the food and drug market. Just why do people see herbs as a way to losing weight fast? Why not use products that are synthetically produced which are guaranteed to work the same way as herbal diet aides do?

Some say that the answer lies in the fact that herbal diet aides are natural and therefore, safe. Herbal diet aides are manufactured from plants while conventional diet drugs are processed synthetically using chemicals and other harmful toxins. While this may be true, it is still wrong to think that herbal diet aides are “safe” just because they are “natural.”

When you think about it, herbal diet aides are more dangerous compared to synthetic drugs. This is because lesser restrictions apply to the manufacture of herbal diet aides as opposed to the countless checks and balances that conventional drugs go through. Manufacturers of herbal diet aides are not required to support their products with scientific findings. In fact, some herbal diet aides even contain in their label that they have not been clinically proven and may cause harmful reactions.

Yet even so, people continue to buy herbal diet aides. Not all herbal products are harmful however. There may be instances where the reactions are caused by the herb’s interaction with some other substance that the individual is taking. This is why when you take herbal diet aides, you are advised against taking other compounds that might interact with the herbal compounds.

Herbal Diet Aides – Appetite Suppressants

Many of the herbal diet aides today are primarily appetite-suppressants. This means that they work more on the individual’s control of his own appetite than on losing weight. When appetite is controlled, less food is taken, thus contribute to weight loss. Herbal diet aides can suppress the appetite by mimicking the effect that glucose as on nerve cells in the brain. Thus, in effect, they fool the body into thinking that it is full even when it is not. In this way, appetite is suppressed and the body takes in lesser food. The cactus, Hoodia gordonii is said to be an effective appetite-suppressant commonly used in herbal diet aides.

Herbal Diet Aides – Fat Regulators

If there are herbs that work by suppressing the appetite, there are also those that help moderate fats deposits in the body. These herbs are called fat regulators and are also found in some herbal diet aides. One good example of a fat regulator is the plant, nopal cactus or prickly pear. Extract from the nopal cactus leaf has a high content of gums and mucilage. These substances help in binding fats and sugars consumed during meals. The digestion and absorption of fats and sugars are said to slow down when nopal cactus leaf is present in your diet.
